Do you need a visa to visit Dakhla?
Dakhla is in Morocco: nationals of the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada or the United States, among others, enter visa-free for tourist stays of up to 90 days with a valid passport. Check the conditions for your nationality before departure.
Is Dakhla a safe destination?
Yes: it is a peaceful, welcoming city where you can move around comfortably by day and in the evening, including for female travellers. The precautions are those of any destination: watch your belongings on the spots and agree on prices (taxis, excursions) in advance.
What is the best time to come?
There is no bad season: the climate is mild all year round. For kitesurfing, the main wind season runs from April to September; to discover the region quietly, prefer October to March. September often offers the best balance between conditions and crowds.
How many days should you plan?
A week is the most common format: it combines board-sports sessions or relaxation, a White Dune / Dragon Island excursion, discovering the city and a good fish meal. A 4-day long weekend also works thanks to the airport's proximity.
How do you reach your hotel from the airport?
The airport is a few minutes from the city centre. Most hotels and all the lagoon camps offer a transfer at booking — the simplest solution. Otherwise, taxis meet every flight: agree on the price before getting in.
Can you pay by card?
In hotels, camps and agencies, usually yes. Everywhere else — restaurants, taxis, the market, small shops — plan on cash in dirhams. ATMs are available in the city centre; withdraw before excursions.
Do you need to kitesurf to enjoy Dakhla?
Not at all. The lagoon is even one of the best places in the world to learn (flat, shallow water, many schools). And without ever touching a kite: desert excursions, beaches, birdwatching, food and relaxation easily fill a week.
Is there mobile network and internet?
The 4G of the Moroccan operators (Maroc Telecom, Orange, inwi) covers the city and most lagoon camps well. A prepaid SIM card takes minutes to buy, and eSIMs work. The network does disappear in the desert, on excursions.
Is Dakhla suitable for a family trip?
Yes: the shallow lagoon, beaches, fun excursions (dune, island, camels) and family accommodation make it a very child-friendly destination. The wind is the main point of attention — pack a windbreaker and sun protection.
Can you find alcohol in Dakhla?
Morocco regulates the sale of alcohol: it is available in some hotels, camps and tourist restaurants, but not in neighbourhood shops. Moderation and discretion are expected, out of respect for local customs.
What should you absolutely eat there?
The lagoon's oysters, farmed on site, are the emblematic speciality. Add grilled fish from the port, the city's tagines and mint tea facing the sunset.
Can you see pink flamingos and dolphins?
Yes, depending on the season: the bay is home to pink flamingos, herons and many migratory birds, and dolphins frequent the region's waters. Watching is best done with a guide, keeping your distance.
